Oliver Stuenkel

Non-Resident Fellow


Oliver Stuenkel is a non-resident fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi). His research focuses on rising powers (specifically, Brazil, China and India), their foreign policy and their impact on global governance. He is the author of IBSA: The Rise of the Global South? (2014, Routledge Global Institutions), BRICS and the Future of Global Order (2015, Lexington) and Post-Western World: How Emerging Powers are Remaking Global Order (2016, Polity). Oliver is also an associate professor of international relations at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in São Paulo, where he coordinates the São Paulo branch of the School of History and Social Science and the executive program in international relations. He is a member of the Carnegie Rising Democracies Network, and a columnist for El País and Americas Quarterly.

Previously, Oliver was a visiting professor at the University of São Paulo in 2010 and the School of International Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi from 2011 to 2012. His commentaries have appeared in The New York Times, Global Times, Today’s Zaman, Mail & Guardian, Times of India, The Asian Age, The Hindu and Folha de São Paulo, O Globo and O Estado de S. Paulo.

Oliver holds a PhD in political science from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, a master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where he was a McCloy Scholar, and a bachelor’s degree from the Universidad de Valencia in Spain.
